What are Cold Sores?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, specifically herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1), and in some cases, herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). Oral herpes affects approximately 50-80% of adults in the U.S., but not everyone will develop cold sores.
