Botox® For TMJ San Diego

Botox® For TMJ Pain

In addition to improving the way you look, Botox® can also relieve pain. As experts of the face and mouth, dentists understand that pain and headaches come from many sources. We use Botox® to provide lasting relaxation to the muscles that cause chronic headaches and TMJ pain. There is no numbness or other discomfort caused in the areas where Botox® application occurs. For most patients, results usually last three to four months before another application is required.

HOW IT WORKS

A Small Amount of Botox® Is Administered Into the Masseter Muscle

Botox® injections being administered around the jaw area to relieve pain. The procedure calls for a small amount of Botox® administered into the masseter muscle, which temporarily block signals from the nerves to the muscles to help prevent clenching and contraction — which can case severe jaw pain.

Note that this Botox® treatment for TMJ / TMD pain is NOT a permanent fix, and I always recommend that we further investigate the root case of pain and try to come up with a more non-invasive / permanent solution.

How Much Does Botox® for TMJ Cost?

The cost for Botox® for TMJ pain is $15 per unit. A typical session is usually around $750 depending on how many units are used and the coverage area that will be addressed.

*patients may opt for Botox® alternatives such as Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA). Prices will vary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ’s about Botox® for TMJ

  • Of course it depends. Normally we see the effects start to wane after 3-4 months. For some patients, it’s 6 months. Over time, repeated use can build a “tolerance” - so we try to be conservative with our treatment.

  • Botox will relax the jaw muscles and help prevent grinding and clenching, which is both a symptom and cause of jaw pain. The goal here is to relieve pain, but also save your teeth from further damage. Again, it’s temporary, and we recommend finding and fixing the root cause of your TMJ pain, whether it be from stress, malocclusion, worn teeth, or injury.
