Cold Sore Treatment in San Diego
Cold Sores (herpetic lesions) are small blisters that appear on the lip and around the mouth that occur due to a herpes simplex (HSV-1) virus infection.
These breakouts are VERY common, and it’s estimated that 67% of the global population is infected by HSV-1. Although there is no cure, the good news is that you can improve the healing time and minimize the social stigma through various treatments.
Cold sores will usually start to heal within a few days and vanish within a few weeks on their own. Creams and ointments can improve healing times by 3-4 days, but we have found that catching the outbreak early and administering laser treatment can greatly improve healing time by 1.5 days or prevent the cold sore altogether if caught in time. Patients who have undergone laser treatment upon the onset of the “tingling” sensation associated with an impending outbreak have had a successful recovery. A recent study definitively demonstrated that treatment with a diode laser reduced the length of recovery time and severity of pain as compared to traditional medicated creams.
Laser = 2 days
No Laser = 4-5 days
Acyclovir Cream = 3-4 days
If you are considering laser treatment, we recommend coming in soon after you start to feel the onset of a cold sore. The laser works be destroying the virus locally and arrests the progression of the lesion after treatment. Full blown lesions may not be treatable, so we recommend catching it early.
At Dental Design SD, we utilize a Picasso laser preset with a 0.5W - 0.8W continuous wave for 30 seconds. The procedure is approximately 10 mins with little to no discomfort.
