I believe that we're only at the beginning stages of progress when it comes to regenerative medicine and the field of dentistry.  While there have been significant breakthroughs in stem cell treatments for certain cancer, metabolic diseases, and blood disorders, interest in the dental field has lagged...or maybe I'm just not catching up on my research :)

If stem cells can be used to encourage the growth of pulp tissue and dentin, then it's plausible that fillings will be entirely unnecessary, and teeth will be encouraged to heal itself.
